This role involves shaping the architectural foundation of an adtech platform, focusing on distributed systems for ad targeting and interaction chains. The Staff Backend Developer will own architectural integrity, reliability, and long-term evolution of systems processing 200 million decisions daily.

Responsibilities

Own the architectural integrity, reliability, and long-term evolution of distributed systems powering ad decisions
Define architectural patterns across the entire ad interaction chain
Ensure core ad scoring pipelines remain resilient under massive load
Define service boundaries, concurrency models, and runtime optimizations for a 99%+ Go microservice architecture
Scale the platform reliably beyond hundreds of millions of monthly active users
Architect and standardize asynchronous microservice communication using event backbones
Establish org-wide streaming standards, schema evolution, and CDC patterns to process billions of daily API events
Aggregate events into a data lake for sub-second querying
Standardize data patterns (sharding, replication, DR) across hundreds of terabytes in various databases
Lead high-stakes, zero-downtime database migrations and deprecations
Partner with the Data Science team to architect runtime infrastructure for serving predictive models and machine learning algorithms
Drive alignment across squads through RFCs and Architecture Decision Records (ADRs)
Define org-level SLIs/SLOs
Sponsor major technical migrations
Mentor Senior engineers across an international engineering team

Requirements

Extensive backend development experience (7+ years)
Deep production Go expertise in distributed environments
Deep experience architecting and standardizing asynchronous microservice communication using Kafka, SQS/SNS, and Kinesis
Understanding of database internals, distributed storage trade-offs, and low-level web standards
Ability to quickly grasp complex technical topics, distributed systems trade-offs, and applied mathematics
Fluent and precise communication in spoken and written English

Nice to have

Hands-on experience with continuous profiling (e.g., Pyroscope, goroutine dumps)
Experience with chaos engineering drills
Experience with infrastructure automation using Terraform, Kubernetes, or AWS cloud networking
